HARGEISA- Two Journalists of a leading independent daily in the republic of Somaliland were sentenced to prison terms on Wednesday, and the paper’s publication license already revoked over defamation against the president of Somaliland H. E. Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo and was also found guilty of two counts of false information propagation.

Hubaal Publisher Mohamed Ahmed Jama Aloley was sentenced to one year imprisonment, while Editor Hussein Hassan Abdilahi Keekeef was given a sentence of two years of imprisonment by Hargeisa regional court. The court also issued an injunction ordering the closure of the paper until the convicted staffers are to finish their prison terms. The court fined that the publisher and the editor to pay 1 million Somaliland Shillings ( US $ 165).

Mohamed Rashiid, the secretary General of Somaliland journalists Association (SOLJA) condemned the verdict reached by the court with the strongest possible terms. The owner of Hubaal Medai Network escaped a well coordinated assassination attempt on his life for almost three months when its headquarters was attacked by masked and armed men later identified as serving police officers.
